Chapter 6

A Disturbing Revelation

My fingers trembled as I clicked on the video link. The initial few seconds were blurry, and I could hear the sound of a scuffle, interspersed with incoherent shouting. But when the video cleared up, the pit in my stomach deepened. There, struggling against two burly Luminarians, was Dr. Adrian Evans, our exobiologist.

"No! Let me go!" His voice was filled with raw fear. But his protests were in vain as he was forcibly led into the extraction chamber. The door sealed shut, and a blueish hue illuminated the room.

I had to choke back a scream when the chamber's door re-opened. Dr. Evans was nowhere in sight. In his place stood a petite woman, her delicate features framed by a cascade of curly hair. Disoriented, she glanced down at herself in horror, taking in her new form.

"Wha- What have you done to me?" Her voice quivered, panic evident in her tone. But before she could do or say anything more, the two men pushed her back into the chamber. The blue light once again enveloped the room.

When the doors opened the second time, the transformation was profound. The figure that stepped out was the epitome of feminine grace, with an ethereal beauty that would put Luminaran women to shame. Her earlier panic was replaced with a gentle contentment. She gracefully accepted a flowing dress handed to her, running her fingers across the fabric and marveling at its softness.

The video ended with her being led away, a serene smile playing on her lips.

The comments section was a nightmare. Users praised the transformation, lauding it as an enhancement, a betterment. Calls for more 'enhancements' for off-worlders echoed throughout. Many pointed fingers at me, questioning my resistance and suggesting that I, too, should undergo a second extraction.

Tears blurred my vision. Not only had they changed Adrian's body, but they had also tampered with his very essence, his soul. And now, they wanted to do the same to the rest of us. The weight of responsibility as the crew's former commander pressed heavily on me. I had to do something. But what? And how? The Luminarians had the technology, the numbers, and, seemingly, the will to carry out their plan. I felt more isolated and helpless than ever before.

The weight of the recent revelation still pressed heavily upon me as I initiated the communication link. A few seconds of static gave way to Commander Jameson's face. The lines of worry etched deep into his forehead were evident even through the grainy video feed.

"Captain," he began, using my old title out of habit, "we've been trying to locate Dr. Evans since his disappearance from the camp. No one had any idea about his... change." The disbelief in his voice was evident.

"We have to do something," I urged, "they're discussing doing this to all off-worlders, including the entire crew. And there's talk about giving me a second dose!"

Before he could respond, the transmission faltered, and the screen started to pixelate. "Captain, can you hear me? We'll.
